Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a complete lockdown across the country for 21 days from Tuesday midnight. The prime minister asserted that social distancing is the only way out for the country in its decisive battle against the coronavirus.
Later, the prime minister tried to allay fear over the lockdown saying there is absolutely no need to panic. In a tweet, PM Modi said, "Essential commodities, medicines etc. would be available. Centre and various state governments will work in close coordination to ensure this."
The prime minister urged people not to go into panic buying mode and said the “Centre and State Governments will ensure all essentials are available.”
By converging around shops, you are risking the spread of COVID-19, the prime minister further said.
The MHA clarified that all transport services—road, rail and air—will remain suspended during the period.
Following the PM's address the home ministry issued guidelines for 21-day nationwide lockdown. According to the guidelines, executive magistrates will be deployed by district magistrate to enforce the lockdown.
The guidelines clarified that fair price shops and those dealing with food, groceries, fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat, fish, animal fodder will remain open.
Hospitals, nursing homes, police, fire stations, and ATMs will continue to work, the MHA guidelines stated. Banks, insurance offices, print and electronic media too will continue to work.
Meanwhile, according to Railway officials, suspension of Railway services will be extended till April 14.
According to the government order, making false alarm during the lockdown may result in imprisonment up to one year.
The lockdown guidelines stipulate that not more than 20 people are permitted during funerals.
