As several parts of Mumbai witnessed waterlogging on Tuesday due to overnight rains, Brihan Mumbai Corporation Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal said the city was facing a "flood-like" situation.
Chahal inspected waterlogged areas on Tuesday. Chahal told news agency ANI that Mumbai had received 230mm of rainfall in 10 hours. "Mithi river had swelled up in the morning because of heavy rains, crossing the danger mark. As of now, it is flowing below danger level. The evacuation of people has also been stopped right now," Chahal told ANI.
The IMD had forecast heavy rainfall would continue in Mumbai and Thane into Wednesday. Owing to this, the government asked all offices and establishments to be closed on Tuesday.
The IMD warned heavy rains in Mumbai could continue into afternoon of Tuesday. At 12.50pm on Tuesday, private forecaster SkyMet tweeted, "Heavy to very heavy rain and thundershower to continue over Andheri, Aurora,Bandra, Borivali, Chembur,Goregaon, Ghatkopar, Kurla, Navi Mumbai, Mumba Devi, Thane, Palghar during next 3-4 hours".
Meanwhile, local train services in Mumbai are expected to resume as water levels recede. The first "down slow" train from Churchgate started after 12pm and the first up train from Andheri started at 11.40am. Fast lines could resume after inspection.
A 15-year-old boy was electrocuted on Tuesday after a live wire of an electricity pole fell near the Owala Hanuman Temple at Ghodbunder Road in Thane. The victim was identified as Rakib A. Mandal.
