Former IPS officer Annamalai Kuppusamy (36), popularly known as "Singham of Karnataka", has joined the BJP on Tuesday at an event held in New Delhi. He joined the BJP in the presence of national party general secretary Muralidhar Rao and Tamil Nadu BJP President L. Murugan.

Exactly a year after he quit, Annamalai, a native of Karur in Tamil Nadu, announced via a Facebook live that he would be entering Tamil Nadu politics and was preparing to contest in the 2021 Assembly polls in the state.

“I want to engage in agriculture, spend time with family and enter politics to bring change in the political system, which is conducive for honest and efficient officers to work,” Annamalai had said, sharing his political ambition. Annamalai believes that he is a natural fit in the BJP as he is a "nationalist" by nature. He is likely to be based in Chennai or Coimbatore in his new innings as a politician.

Annamalai earned the reputation of a tough cop after he dealt with 2017 riots in Bababudangiri in Chikkamagaluru and took on criminals, radicalisation and communal elements in coastal Karnataka region.
