Republic TV reported on Wednesday that the Mumbai Police entered the home of its editor in-chief, Arnab Goswami, and arrested him.
Visuals of Arnab Goswami being forced into a police van were shown by Republic TV. The channel tweeted at 8.42am "encounter cop confirms Arnab Goswami arrested in case that was closed". The case is believed to be an abetment of suicide case registered in 2018.
Goswami claimed he had been physically assaulted by the Mumbai Police. Republic TV reported around 10 policemen entered Arnab's house and "pushed and heckled Arnab demanding he come out".
Republic TV reported, "Mumbai Police blocked Republic Executive editor Niranjan Narayanswamy and senior associate editor Sanjay Pathak from entering Arnab's residence. 8 police vehicles and at least 40-50 Police personnel are in the building premises of Arnab, many armed. When Niranjan said that it is his right to report, he was thrown out of the building and the Mumbai Police wanted his phone."
Arnab Goswami and the Mumbai Police have been at loggerheads over several issues including the lynching of three Sadhus at Palghar, the Sushant Singh Rajput case and allegations Republic TV was involved in a fake TRP scam.
On Tuesday, Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh alleged Arnab was a "hawala operator".
