Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami was denied bail by the Bombay High Court on Monday in the abetment to suicide case. The high court asked Goswami to approach the sessions court to seek bail.
A two-judge division bench comprising S.S. Shinde and M.S. Karnik pronounce the order denying bail to the Republic TV news editor, who was arrested on November 4 in a case relating to the suicide of interior designer Anvay Naik in 2018. Goswami was sent to judicial custody for 14 days.
The Bombay High Court bench had reserved its order in the case on Saturday saying that it would take a decision soon, but issued a notice later that the bench would pronounce its order at 3pm on Monday.
Goswami had filed an interim bail plea while terming his arrest “illegal”. He, along with two other accused―Firoz Shaikh and Neetish Sarda―was sent to a 14-day judicial custody by a magistrate court in Alibaug.
The editor-in-chief of Republic Media Network was initially sent to a quarantine centre in Alibaug, but he was sent to Taloja Central Jail in Navi Mumbai on Sunday after he was allegedly found to be using a mobile phone.
The case was closed by Raigad Police, but reopened earlier this year after Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh ordered a reinvestigation.
Architect and interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud died by suicide in May 2018. Naik left behind a suicide note, accusing Goswami, Shaikh and Sarda of non-payment of dues amounting to Rs 5.4 crore, a year after Republic TV’s launch.
