Kerala: 21-year-old Arya Rajendran to be youngest mayor of Thiruvananthapuram

Arya Rajendran, a 21-year-old college student, is set to create history as she gets ready to take be the youngest mayor of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. An official announcement is yet to come, but Rajendran on Friday said that she would gladly take up the role.

If she takes office, Rajendran would also be the youngest to be mayor anywhere in the country.

Rajendran’s name was recommended by the CPI(M) district secretariat convened on Friday in an attempt to bring the younger generation into more public responsibilities. She is currently the state president of Balasangham, the party’s children’s wing, and also a state level officer bearer of Students Federation of India (SFI). She was elected as the ward councillor from Mudavanmugal.

She was also the youngest candidate in the recently held civic body election, in which the Left Democratic Front (LDF) won five of the six municipal corporations.

The 21-year-old is a BSc Maths student from the All Saints College. She told reporters on Friday that she hoped to manage her education and political work simultaneously.
