Man who fired at Shaheen Bagh protesters joins BJP, sacked hours later

We had no knowledge about his association with Shaheen Bagh issue, BJP clarified

Kapil Gujjar, who is out on bail after he fired at the people protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at Shaheen Bagh in February, joined the BJP on Wednesday, only to be removed from the party hours later.

According to media reports, the Ghaziabad unit of the saffron party, clarified that they did not know about his past when he was inducted into the party. "Kapil Gurjar was part of a group of BSP workers who joined BJP today. We had no knowledge about his association with Shaheen Bagh issue,” ANI quoted Ghaziabad BJP president Sanjeev Sharma as saying.

Upon joining the party, he had reportedly said he decided to join the BJP as it is the party works to strengthen Hindutva.

Gujjar was arrested in February after he had shouted "Hindu Rashtra Zindabad" and fired two rounds during the agitation at Shaheen Bagh. He had then said hamare desh me aur kisi ki nahi chalegi, sirf Hindu ki chalegi (only Hindus shall have a say in our country, no one else)." Nobdoy was injured in the shooting. He was granted bail in March.
