After trailing from Palakkad for most of the day, sitting MLA Shafi Parambil has retained the Palakkad assembly seat for the UDF as won by 3,840 votes on Sunday. Palakkad witnessed a high voltage contest as metroman E. Sreedharan was leading from the constituency for most of the time on Sunday.

However, as counting progressed, Shafi, a two-time MLA from Palakkad, staged a comeback from the third position. Sreedharan, on the other hand, finished third. The technocrat-turned-politician can, however, take heart in the fact that there has been a significant shift in vote share as Shafi Parambil's victory margin came down from 17,483 votes in 2016 to less than 4,000.

Sreedharan's candidature had turned Palakkad into a keenly watched contest where the CPI(M) fielded C.P. Pramod. The BJP had pinned its hopes on increasing its vote share in the constituency, which comprises Palakkad Municipality and is one of the two civic bodies in which the BJP is in power in the state.

In 2016, Shafi Parambil had won from the constituency against BJP's Sobha Surendran, who is contesting from Thiruvananthapuram in Kazhakkoottam this time.
