Security forces on Monday evening killed The Resistance Front (TRF) chief Abbas Sheikh and his deputy Saqib Manzoor in an encounter at Khad Mill ground Allochi Bagh in Srinagar.

Police believe the TRF is Lashkar-e-Taiba in disguise. The group has been involved in several militant-related incidents since 2019.

“Sheikh was the chief of TRF but in reality, both he and Saqib Manzoor are LeT militants,’’ IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar said.

He said that after receiving information about them, 10 policemen in civil clothes encircled then and challenged them. “The two TRF men opened fire and in the ensuing encounter, both militants were killed,’’ Kumar said.

He termed it a big success for the J&K police. “Abbas Sheikh was motivating youths to join militancy,’’ he said. “I appeal to the parents not to allow their children to become militants and those who have joined the militants, bring them back and we will welcome them.”

Sheikh was one of the most wanted militants in Kashmir. His name figured in the 10 most wanted militants which the police recently announced.
