In a blow to the Congress's attempts to address factionalism in its Kerala unit, V.M. Sudheeran on Monday announced his resignation from the All India Congress Committee (AICC). The AICC is the highest decision-making body of the Congress.

The Hindu reported Sudheeran had sent his resignation letter to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

Last week, Sudheeran had stepped down from the political affairs committee of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee. Sudheeran had reportedly been upset with the Congress leadership, both at state level and nationally, for ignoring his views on organisational and political matters.

On Sunday, Sudheeran wrote a letter to Sonia in which he called for the Congress leadership to make an "honest and in-depth introspection" over the party's economic policies since 1991 to effectively counter the BJP-led government at the Centre, "which is selling out the crest jewels of nation's assets". Sudheeran said the Congress has to make "sincere admissions about its deviations from Nehru-Indira economic policies and the mistakes in the past and should make necessary course-correction" to regain the trust and confidence of the people.
