The killing of at least 11 civilians by security forces in an apparent case of mistaken identity in Mon district of Nagaland on Saturday evening has triggered an uproar.
According to reports, a group of people returning to Tiru village area of Mon district in a mini-truck were shot at by security forces. After the incident, local residents set fire to vehicles belonging to security forces.
The 3 Corps of Indian Army released a statement on the incident on Sunday morning. The Army said a specific operation was conducted in Tiru after receiving “credible intelligence of likely movement of insurgents”. Mon district lies near the border with Myanmar.
The Army said “The incident and its aftermath is deeply regretted. The cause of the unfortunate loss of lives is being investigated at the highest level and appropriate action will be taken as per the course of law.”
The Army statement said security forces suffered “severe injuries” in the incident and one soldier had died.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio announced a special investigation team will probe the incident. He tweeted on Sunday morning, “The unfortunate incident leading to killing of civilians at Oting, Mon is highly condemnable. Condolences to the bereaved families & speedy recovery of those injured. High level SIT will investigate & justice delivered as per the law of the land. Appeal for peace from all sections.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also took note of the incident. He tweeted, “Anguished over an unfortunate incident in Nagaland’s Oting, Mon. I express my deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives. A high-level SIT constituted by the State govt will thoroughly probe this incident to ensure justice to the bereaved families.”
