BJP MP Varun Gandhi on Monday questioned the utility of the night curfew imposed by the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh to curb COVID spread.
The night curfew in Uttar Pradesh was put into effect from December 25. It will be in place from 11pm to 5am.
Varun Gandhi referred to the continuation of rallies by political parties in the run-up to the state elections and asked what was the government's priority amid spread of Omicron cases.
He tweeted “Imposing curfew in the night and calling lakhs of people in rallies during the day–this is beyond the comprehension of the common man. Given Uttar Pradesh's limited healthcare systems, we have to honestly decide whether our priority is to stop the spread of the dreaded Omicron or show electoral power.”
Leaders of all major political parties, including the BJP, SP and Congress have been holding rallies across Uttar Pradesh in recent weeks.
Over the past several months, Varun Gandhi has taken stances on key issues that appear to be at odds with the line of the BJP. These include the handling of the farmers' protests and the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri in October.

“Those leaders fear that they will not get (poll) tickets. It makes no difference to me if I do not get a poll ticket. I will only say the truth while governments come and go... If the voice of the people is not raised by the public representatives, then who will raise it?” Varun was quoted as saying by The Quint.
