An executive member of the Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamaat, an Islamic outfit, was arrested on Saturday night in Madurai for allegedly making death threats to Karnataka High Court justices who delivered the recent verdict on the contentious hijab issue. Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamaat is a group that claims to focus on preaching of Islam.
Rahamathulla, an executive member of TNTJ, was arrested for allegedly delivering an inflammatory speech in Madurai on Thursday. Republic TV reported three functionaries of TNTJ had been booked.
Deccan Herald reported Rahamathulla allegedly instigated violence against justices of Karnataka High Court. Rahamuthulla reportedly referred to the killing of a district judge in Jharkhand while on his morning walk last year. He said people knew where the chief justice of Karnataka “goes for a walk”, Deccan Herald reported. Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi headed the three-judge bench that delivered the verdict that said hijab was not an essential practice of Islam.
BJP Tamil Nadu chief K. Annamalai wrote to the chief justice of the Madras High Court seeking an inquiry into the speech.
In Bengaluru, the police registered an FIR on Saturday following complaints from lawyers about the video clip, which had gone viral on WhatsApp. The advocates association of Bengaluru condemned the threat and demanded action from the Karnataka government.
