Nobody questioned discrepancies in Covid death figures, ex-gratia payment claims: Tharoor

‘Gujarat said it had 10,094 deaths, but approved 68,370 claims’

Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor pointed out that there were discrepancies in the Covid-19 death figures and the number of people seeking ex-gratia payments, but nobody raised took up the issue.

Taking to Twitter, the Congress leader said in the question hour session in Lok Sabha on Friday, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) report on Covid-19 was discussed.

"No one raised the discrepancy between official figures of Covid deaths& numbers claiming ex-gratia payments, eg Gujarat says it had 10,094 deaths but has approved 68,370 claims. Which is true?#IssuesIWantedtoRaise," he said in the tweet.

Meanwhile, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, replying to a question in the house, said India managed to handle the Omicron wave better than other countries because of the huge vaccination drive.

"While Omicron caused numerous deaths in other countries, India sailed through the Omicron wave because of vaccination," the minister said.
