Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday appointed Karan Mahara as the party's Uttarakhand unit chief, the AICC said in a statement.

Yashpal Arya was appointed Congress Legislature Party leader and Bhuwan Chander Kapri as Deputy CLP leader.

In the recently held Assembly elections, the BJP retained power in Uttarakhand, winning 47 seats. Congress, which was banking on anti-incumbency against the state government, won 19 seats in the 70-member state Assembly.

Following the electoral defeat, Sonia Gandhi had asked the party’s state unit chiefs in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab and Manipur to resign.
