Politician couple Navneet Rana and her husband Ravi Rana on Sunday courted controversy when they appeared to violate a condition that a special court in Mumbai imposed on them when granting them bail last week.
Navneet, an MP, and Ravi, an MLA, were arrested on April 23 for attempting to chant Hanuman Chalisa outside the residence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
One of the conditions imposed on the couple was that they should not interact with the press on the case against them. Navneet spoke to the media after she was discharged from the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai. Navneet had been hospitalised last week for treatment of spondylosis.
Navneet Rana told mediapersons “Leave aside 14 days, we are ready to stay in jail for 14 years if [chanting] Hanuman Chalisa and taking name of Lord Ram is a crime. If they think a woman's voice can be subdued through jail, a woman will not yield [to pressure] in 14 days. Our fight is a fight for the name of God and I will continue it.”
Acknowledging the restrictions imposed by the court in the bail order, Navneet said she would not comment on the case against her and her husband. Navneet also singled out Uddhav Thackeray for criticism. Ravi Rana told News 18 he would go to Delhi and meet leaders, including the prime minister and home minister, to apprise them of the “situation in Maharashtra”.
Ravi Rana cited a BMC notice to him and his wife about illegal construction at their residence in Khar and alleged he and his wife were being targeted in vendetta politics.
