The CBI on Tuesday morning launched raids at multiple locations nationwide on premises linked to former Union minister and Congress leader P. Chidambaram.
Reports said raids were under way at nine locations in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Sivagangai. The reports said the raids were in connection to a case against Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram, the MP for Sivagangai.
NDTV reported “the investigative agency has registered a fresh case against Karti Chidambaram over alleged foreign remittances between 2010-14.” Hindustan Times reported the new case against Karti was related to irregularities over visas. “The searches are linked to allegations that [Karti] Chidambaram took illegal gratification of ₹50 lakh for facilitating visas for some Chinese nationals for working in a project in Punjab,” Hindustan Times reported.
Karti Chidambaram put up a crypt tweet on Tuesday morning that appeared to be in response to the raids. He wrote “I have lost count, how many times has it been? Must be a record.”
Karti Chidambaram had been arrested in the INX Media case in 2018 and was in custody of the CBI for nearly a month until he received bail.
P. Chidambaram had also been arrested in connection with the INX Media case. He was in custody of CBI and later ED from August to December of 2019.
