A week before she was set to marry herself, 24-year-old Vadodara girl, Kshama Bindu, backtracked her plan to marry in a temple, fearing backlash.
In a first case of 'sologamy' in the country, Kshama was set to marry herself on June 11.
Vice president of Vadodara unit of the BJP and former deputy mayor of the city Sunita Shukla had opposed the marriage, saying she will not allow the ceremony to take place in a Hindu temple. She reportedly said such marriages would reduce Hindu population.
Following Shukla’s objections and fearing further backlash, Kshama decided not to marry in a temple.
She told THE WEEK that she informed Shukla that she has no intention of hurting Hindu sentiments. “I said I apologize if your sentiments have been hurt and I will not marry in a temple,” Kshama said.
Kshama admitted that she was initially planning the marriage in a temple, but decided against it after politics got in the way. She, however, said she will go ahead and marry herself, but refused to divulge details about the venue.
She said she is only interested in the marriage, not where it takes place.
Vadodara city unit president of the BJP Dr Vijay Shah said it was Shukla’s personal stand, and claimed that party has no opinion in it. Vijay Shah said that doing Kumbh marriage is a different thing, but such marriages are not accepted.
Kshama refused to comment when asked if she has the blessing of her parents for the marriage.
