Suhaib Qasmi, president of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, an Islamic forum that seeks to bring about social, educational and religious reform among Muslims, said on Sunday that former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma should be forgiven for her remarks on prophet Muhammad.
According to news agency ANI, Qasmi said Muslim scholars do not endorse the nationwide protest against Sharma.
“Islam says Nupur Sharma should be forgiven. We disagree with the protest that started across the country after Friday prayers against Nupur Sharma and her derogatory remarks,” he said in a press conference in Delhi.
He, however, welcomed the decision of the BJP to suspend Sharma from the party.
The forum said it will issue a fatwa, asking people not to be part of the violent protests taking place across the country. “The fatwa will come against Asaduddin Owaisi and Mohammad Madani.”
"India is the law of the land and we are not going to take the law into our hands. The law does not allow to come on the road and break the rule,” ANI quoted him as saying.
Protests erupted in various places across the country after Friday prayers, demanding action against Sharma. In some places, the protestors turned violent, forcing the police to resort to lathi-charge.
Two persons succumbed to gunshot wounds in Jharkhand capital Ranchi and fresh demonstrations were held in West Bengal's Howrah on Saturday as tension prevailed in several parts of the country.
