The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday said that it will support Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha for the presidential elections scheduled on July 18.

Announcing the decision after the party's crucial political affairs committe (PAC) meeting on Saturday, AAP MP Sanjay Singh said: "We respect Droupadi Murmu but the AAP will support the opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha."

The meeting was attended by AAP national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh, Punjab MP Raghav Chadha, MLA Atishi, and other members of the PAC.

The AAP's decision comes among growing support for NDA's presidential candidate Murmu. Sinha cancelled his visit to Mumbai scheduled on Saturday in the wake of the Shiv Sena announcing support for Murmu. After getting the support of some regional parties like BJD, YSR-CP, BSP, AIADMK, TDP, JDS, Shiromani Akali Dal and Shiv Sena, the vote share of Murmu has already crossed 60 per cent. It was around 50 per cent at the time of her nomination.

Besides AAP, the ruling TRS in Telangana has also extended its support to Sinha.

The AAP is the only non-BJP, non-Congress outfit having governments in two states — Delhi and Punjab.
