Three senior Congress leaders, who are part of the G23, met former party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad at his residence in Delhi on Tuesday. Azad, who was also part of the G23, resigned from the Congress on Friday, accusing Rahul Gandhi of "demolishing" the existing "consultative mechanism" of the party.
Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, former Haryana CM Bhupinder Hooda and senior leader Anand Sharma reached Azad's residence in the evening and are learnt to have discussed the future strategy of the G23.
According to PTI, the leaders are learnt to have also discussed the organisational elections, including that of the Congress president, amid reports that Shashi Tharoor, who is a member of the group, is considering contesting the election for the top party post.
The G-23 is a group of top Congress leaders who have been pressing for collective leadership in the party. In August 2020, the group had sent a letter to Sonia Gandhi demanding an organisational overhaul and elections at all levels of the party. The G-23 had also been critical of certain decisions of the party leadership.
In May, former Union minister Kapil Sibal who was also part of the G-23, quit the party and filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha election with the support of the Samajwadi Party.
Meanwhile, the Congress Working Committee has decided to hold the election for the party's full-time president on October 17.
The notification for the election will be issued on September 22, while the filing of nominations would begin on September 24 and continue till September 30, the party's central election authority chairman Madhusudan Mistry had said after a nearly 30-minute meeting of the CWC.
