The Centre decided to rename New Delhi's historic Rajpath and Central Vista lawns as 'Kartavya Path'.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the revamped Central Vista on Thursday (September 8). The decision to rename the lawns is an attempt to shed names and symbols that are remnants of the British era.
According to media reports, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) convened a meeting on Wednesday with the intention of renaming the lawns.
Kartavya Path will include the entire area from Netaji Statue to Rashtrapati Bhavan.
During his Independence Day speech, Modi had called for removing vestiges of colonialism and slavery. "We must resolve to work towards a ‘viksit bharat’ and rid ourselves from all traces of colonial mindset from all corners of our hearts,” he had said.
