Tremors felt in Delhi-NCR as earthquake hits Nepal

Epicentre was 212 km southeast of Joshimath in Uttarakhand

Strong tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR region and some other northern states on Saturday night after a 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal. People were seen rushing out of their houses and offices in the national capital as the tremors were felt at 7.57 pm.

According to the National Center for Seismology, the epicentre was in Nepal, around 212 km southeast of Joshimath in Uttarakhand.

This is the third time in a week Nepal has been hit by a major earthquake and this is the fifth earthquake in the country in the last three days with an intensity of 4 or above. 

On Wednesday morning, shock waves were felt across north India, including Delhi and surrounding areas of Ghaziabad and Gurugram, when an earthquake of magnitude 6.3 struck Western Nepal.

An IMD official said Saturday's quake originated in Nepal at a depth of 10 km with Latitude 29.28 N and Longitude 81.20 E.

In Uttarakhand, the tremors were felt in places including Pithoragarh, Munsiyari and Gangolihat.

Nepal had witnessed a high-intensity earthquake of magnitude 7.8 on the Richter scale in 2015 when 8,964 people lost their lives.
