Dense fog enveloped Delhi on Monday morning causing traffic disruptions in many parts of the city. The fog resulted in low visibility making it extremely difficult for people to drive on the national highway.
Multiple traffic collision incidents were along the Ambala-Saharanpur highway in Yamuna Nagar and Greater Noida. However, no major injuries were reported so far.
At least a dozen people were injured when around 22 vehicles collided with each other on the Ambala-Saharanpur highway in Yamuna Nagar on Sunday, reported ANI.
The road and rail traffic movement was disrupted in the city, which has recorded the season's first dense fog. According to reports around 20 trains have been delayed.
"Fog affecting train movement today. We have taken precautionary measures. Speed restrictions are put in place in such conditions. Safety is our priority. Passengers are informed about schedules through announcements and other means," a northern railway spokesperson was quoted by PTI.
Meanwhile, since the Low Visibility Procedures were in place from midnight flight operations were not affected.
According to India Meteorological Department, the thick layer of fog was seen extending from Punjab to east Uttar Pradesh across Haryana and Delhi.
Visibility dropped to 150-200 metres at the Palam Airport between 3:30 am and 6 am and improved to 350 metres by 7 am, reported PTI.
For the next five days, IMD predicted dense to very dense fog over plains in the northwest.
According to the IMD, very dense fog is when visibility is between 0 and 50 metres, 51 and 200 is dense, 201 and 500 moderate, and 501 and 1,000 shallow.
Pollution levels were high in the national capital with the air quality index (AQI) settling at 409 at 11 am.
