Expelled from the Democratic Azad Party (DAP), former Jammu and Kashmir deputy chef minister Tara Chand is likely to return to the Congress. Chand was expelled along with two other leaders—Dr Manohar Lal and Balwan Singh—for “anti-party activities”.

The DAP was launched by senior politician Ghulam Nabi Azad in September after he resigned from the Congress.

A statement from DAP general secretary Rajendra Singh Chib said the three leaders were expelled, but did not elaborate on what kind of “anti-party” activities they had indulged in.

Chand is holding consultations with his supporters and has accused Azad of dividing the secular votes.

His rejoining the Congress will be a boost to the grand old party at a time when the Congress and the DAP have been engaged in a war of words, which started after the Azad's party accused JKPCC chief Vikar Rasool of having been involved in anti-national activities in the past.

Chand’s expulsion is seen as a setback to the DAP, as the party has not been able to woo big names to his fold except those from the Congress. Former MLA Surankote Choudhary Muhammad Akram has already distanced himself from the party.
