The Inter-State Cell (ISC) of Delhi's crime branch has nabbed the key accused in the Bihar hooch tragedy which claimed around 80 lives. The accused, identified as Ram Babu Mahto was arrested from Dwarka, Delhi.
According to police, he is involved in several cases of illicit liquor. The Delhi Crime branch officials said that appropriate legal action will be taken against the accused.
Special commissioner of police, Crime Branch, Ravinder Yadav said that they had received the information that the accused was hiding in Delhi. On the basis of technical surveillance and inputs, he was nabbed, said the official.
Meanwhile, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, while talking to the reporters on the arrest of the main accused, said that the government is keeping a close watch. "We have been investigating the case immediately after the incident. The majority of the people are in favour of the liquor ban. Strict action will be ordered against the accused," he said.
Sale and consumption of liquor were banned in Bihar in 2016.
Due to the consumption of spurious liquor over 80 people died in Bihar's Chapra in the Saran district. Tragedy had struck in Isuapur, Mashrak, and Amnour. Locals in the areas said that people complained of nausea, uneasiness, breathlessness and stomach pain.
After the incident, Bihar police conducted raids in many areas and local smugglers were nabbed.
Meanwhile, the BJP criticised the Nitish Kumar-led government by calling its ban on liquor 'a sham'.
