In a fresh twist in the Delhi hit-and-run case in which a 20-year-old woman was killed, the police said on Friday that the man initially accused of driving the car was not inside the vehicle during the accident.
Deepak Khanna, who was believed to have driven the vehicle, was in fact at home all day, police investigation has revealed. He was asked by the other accused to take the blame since he was the only person with a driving license, according to reports. Deepak, a Gramin Sewa driver, was among the five accused arrested earlier, along with Manoj Mittal, Amit Khanna, Krishan and Mithun. On Friday morning, the police arrested a sixth person—Ashutosh—for shielding the accused from the cops.
The police are searching for the seventh accused—Ankush. Ashutosh, owner of the Baleno car that hit Anjali, also misled police by claiming that Deepak had taken the car from him. Ankush is Amit's brother. After Amit informed Ankush about the accident, the latter allegedly convinced Deepak to tell police that he was behind the wheel on the fateful day.
According to reports, Amit, who does not have a driving licence, was driving the car when it ran over Anjali Singh. During investigation, police found that Deepak’s phone location at the time did not match with that of the other four accused in the case. His phone location and call records showed he was at home all day, Indian Express reported.
The five accused have been sent to police custody for four days.
