Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu was convicted in a rape case by a court in Gandhinagar on Monday. The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on Tuesday.
The sessions court, however, acquitted six others including Asaram’s wife for want of evidence.
The case pertains to a complaint filed against the godman by a woman disciple in 2013. According to the FIR that was lodged at the Chandkheda Police Station in Ahmedabad, Asaram had repeatedly raped the woman between 2001 and 2006 at his ashram situated on the outskirts of the city.
Besides Asaram, the case was also filed against seven others. One of the accused died during trial.
Asaram, 81, has been already serving a lifer in Rajasthan's Jodhpur in connection with another rape case. His son Narayan Sai is lodged in a jail in Surat on the charges of sexually assaulting a woman in the Ashram in early 2000.
