The Supreme Court will on Friday hear a petition filed by Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) mayoral candidate Shelly Oberoi seeking the election of mayor and deputy mayor in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in a time-bound manner.
The petition will be heard by a bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and comprising Justice Dipankar Datta on the submission filed by advocate A M Singhvi, appearing for Oberoi.
Oberoi filed the petition after the mayoral election was stalled for the second time this month amid chaos at MCD sitting.
Following this, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal alleged that the BJP was not allowing the mayoral elections. "We want to hold elections. Last time, we all saw the BJP members were deliberately making noise. Now they should accept that they have lost the election."
“They buy and sell. BJP could not buy and sell our corporators and now they are not allowing the house to run,” he said.
Meanwhile, there are reports that the mayoral election is the first item on the agenda for the municipal House slated to be held on February 6 in Delhi. Lt Governor V K Saxena has approved the convening of an MCD House to elect the mayor on February 6, Raj Niwas officials said on Wednesday.
Besides the Mayor, deputy mayor and six members of the standing committee will also be elected.
The date had been proposed by the Delhi government, an official has said. "The agenda for the House says that the election to pick the mayor of Delhi will be held first, followed by that of the deputy mayor and six members of the standing committee," a source said.
