Congress MP Rajani Patil suspended from Rajya Sabha for recording proceedings

Matter will be probed by the Privileges Committee, says RS Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, on Friday, suspended Congress MP Rajani Patil for remainder of the budget session for filming proceedings of the house.

The action against the Congress MP comes after she tweeted a video from inside the house which showed Opposition MPs protesting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's response to the Motion of Thanks on Thursday.

"In the public domain yesterday, on Twitter, there was the dissemination of a video relating to proceedings of this house. I took a serious view of it and did all that was required. As a matter of principle and to keep the sanctity of Parliament, no outside agency's involvement could be sought," Dhankhar said.

"The entire matter will be probed by the Privileges Committee and till we have the benefit of the recommendation of the Privileges Committee for consideration of this august House, Dr Rajani Ashokrao Patil is suspended for the current session," he said.

Reacting to her suspension, the Congress MP said she did nothing wrong. “I did nothing like that but I have been given "faansi ki sazaa" even when I did nothing. I come from a family of freedom fighters and my culture doesn't permit me to violate the law,” she said.

The MP said the opposition repeatedly interrupted the prime minister's reply and this got the BJP “freaked out.” “This is their manufactured programme,” she claimed.
