The President of India on Sunday appointed Brig. Dr. B.D. Mishra who has been Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, as Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Union Territory.

The Secretariat of the President of India on Sunday announced the appointment of Mishra as the new LG of Ladakh after the resignation of R K Mathur as the LG of Ladakh.

Mathur was appointed as the first LG of Ladakh after the region was separated from Jammu and Kashmir and granted a UT status.

Mathur’s resignation has come at a time when the agitation in the UT for statehood and Sixth Schedule status has intensified in the region. The Centre has formed a high-powered committee to discuss the demands of the people of the region, but the Ladakh Apex Body, which represents the political and religious bodies of the Buddhist majority Leh, and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), have refused to budge on their demands.

Mishra retired as Brigadier after spending more than three decades in the Indian Army.

He has served in the Sino-Indian war, 1971 1965 war and the Bangladesh war. He is credited with playing a role in tackling the Naga insurgency.

He played a role in tackling the Naga insurgency in 1963-1964 in Nagaland. He also participated in operations against LTTE as the Brigade Commander of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Jaffna, Vavuniya and Trincomalee in Sri Lanka from 1987 to 1988. After his retirement, he also volunteered for the 1999 Kargil War.
