Hundreds of supporters of Khalistan sympathiser Amritpal Singh clashed with police in Amritsar on Thursday, protesting against the arrest of Singh's close aide Lovepreet Toofan. Carrying swords, guns and other arms, the demonstrators broke the barricades and also stormed into a police station at Anjala.
Singh, who led the protests, has issued an ultimatum to police to cancel the FIR against Toofan.
Heavy security arrangements have been made at the police station as the protesters began a dharna in the complex.
Singh is a self-styled preacher and the chief of 'Waris Punjab De', a group founded by late actor and activist Deep Sidhu. A case had been registered against Singh and his supporters for allegedly kidnapping and thrashing Varinder Singh, a resident of Chamkaur Sahib in Rupnagar district.
Singh reportedly issued a threat recently to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying he will meet the same fate as that of former prime minister Indira Gandhi.
