Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his recent comments on V.D. Savarkar. He said that the Congress leader should fight the "court's action in the court".

"You are getting an ass to run a horse's race...They really deserve to do some serious introspection...People of India would judge them for what they are...Fight court's action in the court, you are invoking Mahabharat and Savarkar," Puri was quoted by ANI.

While addressing the press conference in Delhi, for the first time after he was convicted by the Surat court, Rahul Gandhi had said that his name is not Savarkar and he will not apologise.

He further said that he is not scared of going to jail for speaking the truth.

Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray) faction is also upset with Rahul's Savarkar remarks.

"I want to tell Rahul Gandhi that we have come together...to save democracy and constitution in this country. But do not make any statements that will create fissures," said Uddhav Thackeray, reported NDTV.

Since the conviction, Congress is carrying out nationwide protests. Opposition including AAP, and TMC criticised the Modi government of targeting MPs speaking against them.

The Opposition MPs on Monday took out a protest march from the Parliament complex towards Vijay Chowk over the Adani issue, demanding the constitution of a Joint Parliamentary Committee. Congress president-Rajya Sabha LoP Mallikarjun Kharge and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi also joined the protest.

The Surat court had sentenced him to two years imprisonment in a defamation case filed against him over his "Modi surname" remarks.

Rahul made the remarks in 2019 while addressing a rally "how come all the theives have Modi as the common surname."
