The Lok Sabha witnessed an uproar on Monday after Congress MPs stepped up protest against disqualification of Rahul Gandhi.
The Lower House of the Parliament commenced at 11 am, immediately after which the opposition MPs raised slogans against the BJP goverment for disqualifying Rahul Gandhi.
Two Congress members, T N Pratapan and Hibi Eden, who were in the Well holding placards, flung order papers towards the Chair along with their scarves. Following this, Speaker Om Birla adjourned the session till 4 pm. "I want to run the House with dignity," Speaker Om Birla.
Rajya Sabha too was adjourned till 2 pm.
The Opposition MPs then took out a protest march from the Parliament complex towards Vijay Chowk over the Adani issue, demanding the constitution of a Joint Parliamentary Committee. Congress president-Rajya Sabha LoP Mallikarjun Kharge and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi also joined the protest.
"Why are we here in black clothes? We want to show that PM Modi is ending democracy in the country. He first finished autonomous bodies, then they put up their own govt everywhere by threatening those who had won polls. Then they used ED, CBI to use bend those who didn't bow," Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said.
Earlier the day, the Opposition members, including UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, held a big strategy meeting in the office of Kharge. Interestingly, Trinamool Congress leaders too took part in the meeting despite its chief Mamata Banerjee earlier stating that it will remain equidistant from the BJP and the Congress.
Prasun Banerjee and Jawhar Sircar reportedly represented TMC in the meeting to discuss strategy on Rahul Gandhi's disqualification from the Parliament.
Kharge said that the Congress party welcomes anyone who strides forward to "protect democracy". "I thank everyone who supported this. That is why, I thanked everyone yesterday and I thank them today as well. We welcome anyone who comes forward to protect democracy and Constitution and safeguard the people. We extend heartfelt gratitude to the people who support us," the Congress president said.
All Congress MPs wore black shirts as a mark of protest over Rahul Gandhi's disqualification. Besides the Congress, representatives of BRS and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) too wore black to the meeting.
As many as 17 opposition parties, including INC, DMK, SP, JDU, BRS, CPM, RJD, NCP, CPI, IUML, MDMK, KC, TMC, RSP, AAP, J&K NC, and Shiv Sena (UBT) attended the meeting.
