Indore stepwell collapse: Municipality demolishes illegal structure at temple that claimed 36 lives

Days after the tragic incident that killed 36 people, Indore municipality deployed bulldozers to Beleshwar Mahadev temple in Madhya Pradesh on Monday to demolish illegal construction.

The recent stepwell collapse in the temple had killed 36 people and injured several.

Municipality and police officials reached the temple on Monday morning to ensure action that was carried out without any issues. Police personnel from four police stations have been deployed at the site to maintain law and order.

Along with the police officials, the Deputy Municipal Commissioner, District Magistrate, and other officials were also present at the spot.

The police had registered an FIR against the temple authorities after the tragic incident. Reportedly, two municipal officials have been suspended for not removing illegal construction.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced Rs 5 lakh compensation to the families of the victims and Rs 50,000 to those injured in the accident and also ordered a magisterial probe.

Also, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced compensation from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of the accident victims.

On Thursday last week, the slab constructed on top of an ancient 'bawdi' or stepwell collapsed during a 'havan' programme held on the occasion of Ram Navami at the Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal temple in Patel Nagar. Several devotees fell into the water reservoir below as the roof collapsed.

The temple had been constructed after covering the square-shaped stepwell of around 20 ft x 20 ft size about four decades ago.

Indore Police Commissioner said that a case was registered against president and secretary of the temple administration under IPC 304.
