Sudan clashes: Indian national dies of stray bullet injuries

An Indian national working in Sudan has succumbed to stray bullet injuries that he suffered in the clashes that broke out between the Army and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan.

"It has been reported that Mr Albert Augestine, an Indian National working in a Dal Group Company in Sudan who got hit by a stray bullet yesterday succumbed to his injuries. Embassy is in touch with family and medical authorities to make further arrangements," tweeted Indian Embassy in Sudan.

A fight has broke out between the army and paramilitary forces across Sundan on Saturday. The clashes have left many including the Indians reeling under panic and fear. People were asked to stay indoors by the state officials. Indian Embassy in Sudan tweeted an advisory asking Indian citizens to stay indoors.

Meanwhile, External Affair Minister (EAM) S. Jaishakar tweeted that “Deeply grieved to learn about the death of an Indian national in Khartoum. The Embassy is making all efforts to extend fullest assistance to the family. The situation in Khartoum remains one of great concern. We will continue to monitor developments.”

A number of SOS messages have been posted online by Indians, who are stuck in hotel rooms across the capital city Khartoum.

The fighting continued overnight in the capital, Khartoum, were gunfires were dodged as the rival forces battled over the presidential palace.

According to the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors, 56 civilians and 595 others were injured in clashes. According to the official data, the number of Indians in Sudan is around 4,000 including, 1,200 who have settled down in the country decades ago. 

The US, UK and the EU has intervened and asked to end the fight.
