The autopsy report of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad revealed that he was shot nine times on head, chest and back outside the hospital in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh on Saturday
During the postmortem examination at least nine bullet injuries were found in the dreaded gangster's body and also five bullets were reported recovered from the body of his brother Ashraf Ahmad, reported NDTV.
He was shot once on the head and eight times on the chest and back, said the autopsy report.
Meanwhile, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court (SC) seeking to constitute an independent expert committee headed by a former apex court judge to probe the murder.
“Issue guidelines/directions to safeguard the rule of law by constituting an Independent Expert Committee under the Chairmanship of former Supreme Court justice to inquire into the 183 encounters which had occurred since 2017 as stated by Uttar Pradesh Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) and also to inquire into the police custody murder of Atiq and Ashraf,” read the petition filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari. .
"In a democratic society the police cannot be allowed to become a mode of delivering final justice or to become a punishing authority. The power of punishment is only vested in the judiciary," the plea stated referring to Atiq's killing.
The two brothers were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on Saturday night while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college here for a checkup.
The three shooters were identified as Lavlesh Tiwari (22) of Banda, Mohit alias Sunny (23) of Hamirpur and Arun Maurya (18) of Kasganj. An FIR had been registered against them under the IPC sections 302 and 307.
