Heavy rainfall across India; IMD issues rain alert in hill states

With many states receiving heavy downpours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued rain alert across North and South states.

IMD has predicted light, moderate to intense rain with likely thunderstorm and lightening over several states.

“Light to moderate rainfall with few spell of intense rain, thunderstorm & lighting very likely to continue over parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, south interior Karnataka, northeast India, central & east Uttar Pradesh, West Bihar, East Madhya Pradesh, north Chhattisgarh and Jammu division during next 06 hours,” stated IMD.

The weather forecast was issued on Monday late night as many parts of India received rainfall with thunderstorms and even hailstorms.

Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry recorded rainfall.

The bulletin also showed that rainfall was received in many places in Punjab, UP, West Bengal, Odisha, Kerala and Lakshadweep.

Due to western disturbance, even hailstorms in parts of Rajasthan.

Alert issued in states

With intermittent snowfall in Badrinath and Kedarnath, pilgrims going to the temples were stopped in Srinagar. SSP Shweta Choubey of Srinagar said that pilgrims were appealed to seek shelter in Srinagar till the weather clears up.

With heavy snowfall and rain, yellow alert was issued in Uttarakhand on Monday.

An orange alert and heavy rainfall warnings has been issued for the next 2-3 days in Himachal Pradesh after many parts received heavy downpours.

According to officials, heavy rainfall is expected for the next 48 hours.

IMD had issued orange alert in Shimla due to heavy rainfall. The city has been hit with continous rains. potential landslides and flash floods are also a concern. IMD urged people to take necessary precautions.

Temperature dips in Delhi

After heavy rains lashed in many parts of Delhi on Monday, the temperature settled at 19.3 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

While India Meteorological Department has forecast thundershowers and gusty wind during the day in the city.

The national capital recorded 15 mm rainfall in the 24 hours.

On Monday, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature at 19.6 degrees Celsius, five notches below normal.

According to IMD, the relative humidity stood at 87 per cent.

The maximum temperature was recorded at 26.1 degrees Celsius.

On Tuesday, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was 'satisfactory', recording a reading of 73.
