In the backdrop of the recent fire at Kochi's Brahmapuram waste treatment plant, the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) on Thursday, announced its plans for 'waste disposal at source'.

Though the Kochi Municipal Corporation has been planning alternatives, there are no permanent solutions. At a press meet on Thursday, the GCDA committee said it has been insisting the Corporation to dispose waste in lesser quantities rather than dumping everyone’s waste together at the landfill. And now, the GCDA plans to move ahead with its own proposals for waste management in the city.

As a first step, the GCDA is organising a workshop at the Town Hall on June 4, just in time for World Environment Day. With the participation of residential bodies, other social organisations and experts who have succeeded in implementing proper waste management systems, GCDA aims at making public aware about low-cost measures for organic waste disposal.

The experts will also teach participants how to use inoculum powder that helps convert organic waste into compost in a short time. The campaign will be conducted by representatives from the Swachh Bharat Mission waste management wing and Clean Kerala among others.
