Monsoon session of Parliament from today; Manipur strife, Delhi ordinance to rock floor

Congress MP Manish Tewari gave adjournment motion notice to discuss the violence

As the monsoon session of the Parliament begins on Thursday, the opposition parties are set to raise the issue of ethic strife in Manipur.

Congress Lok Sabha MP Manish Tewari has given adjournment motion notice to discuss the violence in the north eastern state amid outrage over the viral video showing two women being paraded naked.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore too gave adjournment motion notice in Lok Sabha to discuss the "violence against women and children in Manipur" while CPI MP Binoy Viswam gave suspension of Business Notice in Rajya Sabha under rule 267, demanding a discussion on "disturbing developments in Manipur."

The Trinamool Congress too has stated that the party will raise the issue of ethnic strife-torn Manipur in Parliament.

The all-party meeting held on Wednesday ahead of the monsoon session too was dominated by the Manipur issue. "All parties have been demanding a discussion on Manipur. The government is ready for a discussion on Manipur whenever the Rajya Sabha Chairman and Lok Sabha Speaker decide a date and time," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said on Wednesday.

After the Congress supported the Aam Aadmi Party’s request to oppose the ordinance brought by the Centre to curb the administrative control of Delhi government over bureaucracy, the grand old party, along with other allies, moved a statutory motion to oppose the bill. Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is expected to initiate the discussion over the issue. The AAP has only one MP, Sushil Kumar Rinku, who won the recent Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll. The ordinance had become a rallying point for all the Opposition parties to achieve unity. It will be the first case of testing I.N.D.I.A's unity efforts.

The government has heavy legislative business for the Monsoon Session of the Parliament beginning on Thursday with the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023 among 31 Bills on its agenda.

Another key bill to be introduced is the digital personal data protection bill. It seeks to provide for the processing of digital personal data that recognizes both the right to protect personal data and the need to process the same for lawful purposes. The bill aims to establish a comprehensive legal framework governing digital personal data protection in India.
