Rain pounds Delhi, NCR regions; flood warning in Karnataka

Authorities declared a holiday for schools in Karnataka, Telangana on Wednesday

Heavy showers continued to lash Delhi and NCR region on Wednesday morning, throwing life out of gear. Several parts of the national capital, including ITO Road, witnessed waterlogging thereby disrupting traffic.

Parts of the NCR region, including Noida and Ghaziabad, too witnessed heavy rains on Wednesday. The rain will continue till Thursday, according to a bulletin by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The weather agency has issued a 'yellow' alert for most of the Delhi-NCR region. "Heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorm/lightning at isolated places over west Uttar Pradesh. Heavy rain/thunderstorm/lightning at isolated places over HP, Punjab, Haryana, East Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan," the IMD said.

All schools up to class 12 in Noida and Greater Noida will remain closed on Wednesday due to rain and waterlogging. "Due to rains and waterlogging, District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma has ordered the closure of all schools up to Class 12 for today," District Inspector of Schools Dharmveer Singh said. 

Karnataka

Many parts of Karnataka too witnessed heavy rains on Wednesday as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the state government is prepared to tackle any emergency. 

"The @Indiametdept has issued a flash flood bulletin, warning of potential flash floods in some parts of Coastal Karnataka and North Interior Karnataka. The Government has reviewed the risk-prone areas and is well prepared to tackle the issues on the ground," the Chief Minister tweeted.

The authorities have declared holidays for schools and colleges in the vulnerable region. 

Meanwhile, all the reservoirs in the state are completely filled up with a heavy inflow of water and most of the rivers are in spate.

The IMD has sounded an orange alert for the coastal and Malnad region in the state with a forecast that moderate to heavy spells of rain accompanied by gusty winds was likely in these places. 

Telangana

Besides Karnataka, Telangana too saw heavy showers, following which the government declared holidays to all educational institutions in the state on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Met Centre of IMD here in its 'Daily Weather Report of Telangana State' on Tuesday (0830 hours) said Velpur in Nizamabad district received 40 cm rainfall, followed by Jakranpalle and Bheemgal (23 cm each) in the same district. The downpour led to inundation of low-lying areas in Warangal, Nizamabad and other districts.

The IMD has predicted heavy-to-very-heavy rain with extremely heavy rain at isolated places in Karimnagar, Peddapally and other districts on Wednesday. Heavy rain is very likely to occur in several other districts during the same period, it said.

"From 8.30 am on July 26 to 8.30 am on July 27, heavy-to-very-heavy rain with extremely heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places in Khammam, Nalgonda and other districts," the bulletin read. Hyderabad is also likely to witness very heavy rain and at times very intense spells are very likely to occur in the city on Wednesday.
