A woman was brutally murdered in broad daylight at a park near Aurbindo College in South Delhi on Friday.
"We received information that the body of a 25-year-old girl was found near Aurbindo College in South Delhi's Malviya Nagar. An iron rod was found near her body. According to a preliminary investigation, the girl was attacked with a rod," news agency ANI quoted South Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Chandan Chowdhary, as saying.
According to media reports, the 25-year-old woman, a student of Shri Aurobindo College, was attacked with an iron rod by a man who was with her in the park. Police got the information about the incident at 12.08 pm.
The police have arrested the victim's cousin, Irfan, in connection with the murder.
The accused reportedly wanted to get married to the deceased, but her family objected to it.
"The boy was disturbed after the marriage broke off and the girl stopped taking his calls and would not talk to him. That is why he killed her," NDTV quoted DCP Chowdhary as saying.
Condemning the incident, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal said the law and order has completely collapsed in Delhi. "The name of victims changes daily, but the crimes against women are not reducing," she said.
"Two incidents took place today; a girl was shot in Dabri and the second incident took place near Aurbindo College where another woman was beaten to death by an iron rod. I appeal to the Central government to call a meeting regarding the safety of women in Delhi. DCW is taking cognizance of these incidents, and we are issuing notices for the same," she said.
