A mob set on fire a restaurant and vandalised several shops amid religious chants in Gurugram's Badshahpur on Tuesday afternoon in a fresh bout of violence that came a day after five persons were killed and over 70 others injured in communal clashes in neighboring Nuh district.
According to reports, a mob of around 200 people reached the area around 4 pm and vandalised several meat shops belonging to a particular community and set fire to an eatery. They also chanted "Jai Shri Ram" in front of a mosque in Badshahpur.
A fire brigade team reached the spot and controlled the blaze, police said, adding that the Badshahpur market has been shut down. The rioters managed to flee the spot by the time the police reached, though some of the suspects have been detained.
The violence erupted in the area on Monday after a procession of the Vishva Hindu Parishad came under attack by a mob. Five persons, including two security personnel and the cleric of a mosque, lost their lives as violence escalated by the evening.
So far, 44 FIRs have been registered and 70 people taken into custody, police said.
Sixteen companies of central forces and 30 companies of Haryana Police have reached Nuh even as Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said the attack on the VHP procession seemed to be part of a big conspiracy and asserted that strict action would be taken against the culprits.
Mobile internet services have been suspended in Nuh and Faridabad up to Wednesday. Educational institutes were ordered to remain shut on Tuesday in Gurugram, Faridabad and Palwal districts as a precautionary measure.
