Manipur: 15 houses torched, one person shot in fresh violence

Fresh violence broke out in Manipur's Imphal West district on Sunday morning. According to officials, 15 houses were set on fire and a person was shot in the incident that occurred at Langol Games village.

A mob went on a rampage and torched the houses, said the officials.

Several rounds of tear gas shells were fired to disperse the mob and bring the situation under control.

A 45-year-old man was shot during the violence. He was rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) with bullet wounds on his left thigh. According officials, he is out of danger.

Restrictions were imposed in the area after violence broke out. “The situation is under control now,” said the officials.

Fresh violence was also reported from Imphal East district's Checkon area on Saturday. A large commercial establishment was torched in the area, he added.

Three nearby houses were also set on fire, said officials.

Even amid the 24-hour general strike called by the coordinating committee of 27 assembly constituencies, which paralysed normal life in the Imphal valley on Saturday, the incidents of violence was reported.

Three people including a father and son from the Meitei community were killed by suspected militants in Ukha Tampak village in Manipur's Bishnupur on Saturday.

According to police the attackers had raided the village near Kwakata, which comes under Phougakchao Ikhai police statition.

Over 160 people have lost their lives, and several have been injured since ethnic violence broke out in the state on May 3, when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
