'PM turned his back on daughters of Manipur': Kejriwal targets Modi in assembly; BJP MLAs walk out

5 BJP MLAs were marshalled out after they protested against Manipur being discussed

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal targetted Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Delhi assembly on Thursday, accusing him of "turning his back on daughters of Manipur".

The Delhi CM alleged that Modi "remained silent" on the ethnic violence in Manipur and said the entire nation is asking the reason for his silence.

"The prime minister is like a father figure. He turned his back on the daughters of Manipur. You kept sitting in your room. The entire country is asking the reason for PM's silence. It is not the first time that he is silent. Whenever there is a crisis situation over the past nine years, the prime minister remained silent," the Delhi CM said.

The assembly witnessed a ruckus after the BJP protested against the discussion on the Manipur issue in the house.

AAP MLA Durgesh Pathak began a short-duration discussion over the violence in Manipur, leading to a protest from the BJP MLAs. The saffron party legislators said issues related to Delhi should be debated in the House.

Pathak responded saying it is their right and duty to discuss the issue in the house as lakhs of people from Manipur live in Delhi.

Deputy Speaker Rakhi Birla questioned the BJP legislators over their protest saying, "Do they feel that Manipur is not an issue to be discussed in the assembly." He pointed out that the issue was discussed in the Uttar Pradesh assembly as well.

As the BJP MLAs refused to relent, four of them—Abhay Verma, Jitender Mahajan, Ajay Mahawar and O.P. Sharma—had to be marshalled out of the house. Later, another MLA, Mohan Singh Bisht, too was marshalled out, following which other BJP members walked out.

Pathak said it was unfortunate that the BJP objected to a discussion over the Manipur issue in the Delhi assembly even though the matter was debated by the Uttar Pradesh assembly. Manipur was burning due to the policies of the BJP, he said, adding people in the state were unsafe.

"While Manipur was burning, the prime minister was touring foreign countries," Pathak alleged.
