The fresh violence that broke out in violence-hit Manipur claimed lives of three youths at Kuki Thowai village in Ukhrul district (Naga-dominated area) on Friday.
Sounds of heavy gunfire was heard from the village under Litan police station on the early hours of Friday.
Bodies of the three persons bore injury marks apparently made using sharp knives and their limbs were also chopped off, officials said.
N. Vashum, superintendent of police (SP), Ukhrul said that they received the information that a group of armed miscreants approached the village from hills located to the east of the village and started firing at village guards. “Three people from the village have been killed...no other reports of any injuries,” said Vashum.
After the incident, security in the area was strenghtened.
On August 5, five persons belonging to both the communities were killed in separate incidents of shooting between the Meitei and Kuki community.
Meanwhile, 10 MLAs submitted a memorandum Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking creation of separate posts of similar to chief secretary, and director general of police (DGP) for efficient administration of the five hill districts in Manipur.
"In order to solve the problems faced by government employees belonging to Kuki-Zo tribes and for efficient administration of the districts inhabited by us, the post of chief secretary or its equivalent post and the post of DGP or equivalent post need to be immediately created," the letter read.
The ethnic clashes broke out in the northeastern state on May 3, after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
