Bihar boat capsize: Search continues for nine missing

The search operation to recover the bodies of people, who went missing in the boat capsize in Bagmati river in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district, continued for the second day on Friday. Two bodies were found in the search operation that was carried out in the morning. Meanwhile, nine people were still missing, said officials.

District Magistrate Pranav Kumar told PTI that bodies of a 40-year-old man and a four-year-old child were found. “Searches are underway to trace the remaining missing persons,” he said.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) along with State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) is conducting search for the remaining nine missing persons.

Meanwhile, videos of the rescue operations after the incident were seen in some news portals, where some residents were seen jumping into the river to pull out the children.

Reportedly, people of Madhupur Patti village of Benibad, under Gaighat police station area of Muzaffarpur have to travel to Bhatgama to attend school or market. It takes around eight kms to reach Bhatgama by road. Opting for the shorter travel, people usually prefer crossing the river by boat to get to the opposite side. Children also travel by boat to reach Balaur High School located on the other side.

Reportedly, the demand for a bridge has not materalised so far.

A boat with around 30 people capsized near Madhur Patti ghat of Bagmathi river on Thursday morning when it was on the way to Bhattgama ghat on the opposite side. Soon after the incident, 20 children were rescued. While 11 persons, including students and women, went missing.
