The Tamil Nadu police have warned of stern action against those spreading fake news on the ongoing Cauvery water-sharing dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Reportedly, the police have registered against two persons in different parts of the state for spreading fake news on the issue.
The Tamil Nadu DGP office, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said amid protests by certain organisations in Karnataka against the release of Cauvery water from Kabini dam to Tamil Nadu, a person in Madurai and another Tirunelveli has spread images of an attack on a lorry driver, which happened years ago, as a recent incident on social media.
According to reports, the individuals spread images of the incident which happened a few years ago on Facebook. Madurai and Tirunelveli police have registered a case against the individuals for trying to law and order issue. The accused are at large and police are on the lookout for the accused.
'Kannada Okkuta', an umbrella organisation for Kannada organisations, on Wednesday claimed that the dawn to dusk bandh called by them on September 29, to protest against the release of Cauvery river water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu, will be successful, and warned the state government against measures to curtail it.
As part of the bandh from 6am to 6pm on Friday, there will be a massive protest procession from Town Hall to Freedom Park in the city, in which people from all walks of life are likely to participate, the organisers said.
They have said that the bandh is for the entire Karnataka and that they will try to shut highways, toll gates, rail services, and also airports.
The Bengaluru bandh called by 'Karnataka Jala Samrakshana Samiti', an umbrella outfit of farmers and Kannada organisations, and backed by the BJP and JD(S) on Tuesday in protest against the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu evoked a partial response.
