Reacting to the arrest of Punjab MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday said his party would not tolerate injustice.

Kharge, however, said that he doesn't have more details of the matter as he was in Bengaluru and came to Chhattisgarh to attend a pre-planned state government event.

Khaira was arrested by Punjab police from his Chandigarh residence earlier in the day for his alleged involvement in smuggling of drugs and money laundering.

"I will take its details...But whatever may be the case, if someone does injustice, they don't survive for long. If anyone does injustice to us, then we are not the ones who will tolerate it," Kharge said while speaking to reporters in Chhattisgarh’s Sumabhata after attending the 'Krishak-sah-Shramik Sammelan'.

Khaira was arrested in connection with a case registered in Jalalabad in 2015 under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Nine people, including Gurdev Singh—a close aide of Khaira—has already been convicted in the case. Police had recovered two kg of heroin, 24 gold biscuits, one country-made pistol, a .315-bore pistol and two Pakistani SIM cards from them. Khaira's name cropped up later during the police probe.

The charges against Khaira include supporting an international gang of smugglers, having sheltered them and receiving financial benefits from drug traffickers, and enjoying the proceeds of crime.

His arrest has sparked off a war of words between the Congress and the ruling AAP. The Congress has accused the Bhagwant Mann government of targeting its leaders by slapping false cases on them.

The BJP, too, has criticised the arrest of Khaira, saying the AAP government in the state was misusing the police.
