With six more deaths being reported at Dr Shankarrao Chavan Medical College and Hospital in Maharashtra's Nanded, a case has been lodged against the dean and doctors of the hospital's Delivery Department.

The FIR has been filed against the officials under IPC Sections 304 and 34, said police.

Abhinash Kumar, Additional SP, Nanded, told ANI that the case pertains to a victim who lost her newborn baby two days ago and her mother died on Wednesday.

“There were no allegations of medical negligence in the complaint given. It was more against an individual and administrative negligence. A three-member medical committee was constituted to probe the matter. FIR registered against Dean and medical officer of the concerned department (of Dr Shankarrao Chavan Medical College and Hospital)

At least 31 people died in the government-run Medical College and Hospital reportedly due to an alleged scarcity of medicines. Between September 30 and October 1, a total of 24 patients died. These include newborns.

"Another six critical patients died from October 2 to 3. The two babies among them were born prematurely. The other four deaths took place due to the reasons such as renal failure and multiple organ failure," PTI quoted an official as saying. The total death toll has reached 37 with the latest casualties.

On Wednesday, another FIR was lodged against Shiv Sena MP Hemant Patil, a day after he forced the acting dean of a government hospital in Maharashtra's Nanded to clean dirty toilets, said police.

The Hingoli lawmaker, belonging to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, made Shyam Rao Wakode, the acting dean of the Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital, to clean toilets amid outrage over deaths of patients.
